U9'S match report 24th March 2019

U9’s v Usk
The change in weather from the 9’s last outing was an absolute treat for players and supporters, short sleeves and sunnies were evident along all sidelines.

For the third time this season Machen 9’s turned out against the red and blacks of Usk. The previous encounter was a very close game with a single try separating the teams so it was surprising how the first third played out. A great turn out by Machen meant for lots of substitutes and a busy day for Matt the stat (again doing a great job) in rotating the team so all players get the same game time. Unfortunately Usk were 2 players short so to maximise game time we also rotated 2 players for the opposition.

Machen were first out of the blocks in the first third racing to a three try lead through Tom Garrod and Jacob Tunbridge x2, showing some lovely handling and real pace to cut through the Usk defence.

To back up the sharp running rugby, the tackling and defensive line was as good as any game this season. Usk pulled a score back but Machen again showed good quality with Sonnie Boe Sargent and Alfie Davies finishing off some great interplay.

The second third was much tighter and Usk showed real character to win the half with some great running rugby helped by the Machen on loan contingent. A barn storming run by Millie Ferris breaking 3 tackles then outpacing the cover brought Machen’s first try in the second period. Usk scored 3 well worked tries even though the Machen defence tackled everything that moved. Ashton Lawton gave a trademark bulldozing run to race in from 20 yards to finish off the scoring for the half.

The last third went to Machen, again turning on the style and using the width of the pitch with slick hands and fast feet. Getting his try scoring boots back on, Tom Garrod was instrumental in a lot of Machen’s good interplay supplying the ammunition for Alfie Davies x2 and Jacob Tunbridge to fire. The last score of the game was by Ashton Lawton but in the red of Usk, showing true sportsmanship as did every player that helped them out.
Coaches player of the week was a unanimous decision and went to Harri Dearden for his brilliant tackling, great running and handling.

Try scorers were:-
Tom Garrod
Jacob Tunbridge
Alfie Davies
Sonnie Boe Sargent
Millie Ferris
Ashton Lawton

Final score Machen 11 - Usk 6
