U9'S match report 17th Feb 2019

An awesome report from the under 9's this week!

Machen under 9’s V Girlings
After another two weekends without a match Machen’s 9’s travelled to Cwmbran to play Girlings.
Two weeks without a match meant the coaches could spend time in training working on the style and direction we need to take to keep on improving and developing as a team.
With only 10 players available, the excellent fitness of the team would be needed towards the later stages of the game. The parents also needed good fitness for the walk to and from the field, especially when the leaders decided to walk an extra field or two before finding a gap in the fence to jump through.
Machen started with the ball and quickly got back in the rhythm, playing some lovely free flowing rugby, but also continuing their solid defensive duties without the ball, the first third turned into quite a one sided affair keeping Girlings scoreless and running in some really well crafted tries.
Girlings were far better in the second third and made the Machen team really work hard for everything they got. This third Machen’s defence needed to be good and it certainly was.
The last third Machen turned up the heat and played some outstanding rugby in light of the fact they are 8 & 9 year old children. Most pleasing for the coaches was the ball retention which is what the last two weeks training has concentrated on. All of the players were outstanding but a few mentions for Reuben DSC, Dylan Griffin and Ioan Griffiths for implementing what the coaches are asking for, driving forward and looking after the ball.
Tom Garrod’s beautiful passing which was commented on by the opposition was the best seen this season, and with Alfie Davies earned the first big prize of the season for looping and switching in open play.
The coaches player of the match was deservedly won by Sonnie Boe Sargent for his three tries, his tackling, but more importantly his communication on the field.
Tries were scored by :-
Ashton Lawton
Jacob Tunbridge
Sonnie Boe Sargent
Tom Garrod
Alfie Davies
A huge step in the right direction in winning this match. After the match both sets of players got on really well, eating, drinking and laughing together which was a perfect end to a great performance. Very proud of these players on and off the field, a credit to our club.
Thank you parents for the determined walk and fabulous support.
